I think that the pictures I took of the students around the college for both my front cover and contents page were good because they illustrated the message I wanted to get across to the reader affectively. I picked the picture on the front cover because I wanted the readers to focus their attention on one student rather than a group because it would create the idea that everyone is an individual instead of generalising a group; this is a reflection of one of my cover lines. The picture still shows people in the back ground to help to illustrate the college feel. The frame is a mid-shot of the model I used; this still allows the audience to see some of the scenery. The pictures on the contents page were to give the readers an insight into the college and to just show what generally happens around college.
I didn’t use photo shop to manipulate the image on the cover at all because I like it the way it was, I felt that it was bright enough and the contrast worked well with the colour scheme. The pictures on the contents page were all faded around the edges in InDesign to give it a softer look I didn’t really like the layout when the edges were sharp.
I positioned the layout of the front cover that way because I wanted the reader to see as much of the image as possible but to also see all the cover lines and masthead properly that’s why I put them more towards the outside of the page but still within the margins. I displayed my front cover like this because I didn’t want to over crowd the page with too many cover lines, I also wanted the page to follow a colour scheme of the LSC logo that also featured on the contents page.
The contents page was much harder to create for me because I found it hard to incorporate a design with the colour scheme; however I am happy with what I’ve come up with. I decided to make the back ground orange because I didn’t want to make it look too dark with black or too dull with white. I was a bit worried that it would be a bit too bright but I think it works well with the faded edges because it also gives the page a gentler look; it also compliments the front cover. The black squares were used as bullet points so it is easy for the reader to differentiate each page.
I found InDesign much easier to use this time and I felt that it I used more of the tools more effectively. Photo shop was a bit difficult to use as first but once I got the hang of it. I thought that it was very interesting to see all the layers come together to create one image when was finished.
I think that I could have improved the layout of the contents page by experimenting with different designs. On the front cover I put a bar code on the bottom left hand corner; I didn’t necessarily need it as the magazine would be free.
My audience feedback was done on blogger. I uploaded my front cover and contents page and people from my class commented on them.
“Great work! However you should write the issue number. I might be mistaken but I don’t think that the bar code is necessary, as the magazine in free”
“Very interesting layout and use of colours. You should add an editor's note. Other than that, the contents page looks very good :) “
“Love it! I love the use of colours and the effects that you have added on the pictures. Personally the only thing that I don’t like is the font of the text but overall it’s really nice”
