Case Study2 - Vibe Contents Page and DPS
The contents page of this edition is called
departments; the masthead is the boldest text on this page so it stands out.
There are five subheadings that represent each department of the magazine, in
front of each subheading there is a page number, which is I colour, that each
section starts on. These departments are Enter, Blast, Splurge, Business class
and Props. Vibe magazine have used five different symbols to represent the five
different departments; these logos and the individual ccolour schemes that go
with them are seen in other Vibe magazine contents pages and throughout the
issues to help the reader determine what department they are in and also to
have a varied theme throughout the magazine.
Most of the text on the page is black the
only colour in terms of text is the page numbers which are in the same font and
the same size as the subheadings. The text is in one text box, which is
positioned on the top right hand side in a column; this is to prevent the text
from covering the main image but also allows an equal amount of attention. The
sub headings are also in bold and the same font as the heading. The description
of the content in each department is in bold but isn’t in the same font or
size, this to emphasize each section of the magazine and highlight that each
part is unique in its own right.
Once again the duo, Diplo and Azealia Banks
are modeling in the main image also set on a beach on the contents page; this
shows that the front cover and contents pages of the magazine were designed
around them. The main image acts as a background and is a long shot to capture
the scenery of the sand and sea on the beach in the frame. The props used in
the image illustrate a relaxed day at the beach it also helps the shot look
more realistic. The lighting in the image has been made to look like natural daylight
creating slight shadows around the models. Azealia’s white dress, calm body
language and direct eye contacts toward the audience reveals an innocent, pure
side to her however the red theme of her hair, lipstick and the deck chair
represents passion and a provocative nature to counterbalance side to her
personality that we didn’t see on the cover of this edition.
Diplo’s costume
doesn’t really denote a day at the beach however his body language does fit in
with the relaxed nature of the image, the way his feet are crossed and he is
leaning against the wooden fence. He also looks slightly daring with his hands
behind his back and his head tilted to the side, his facial expression and
direct eye contact with the audience is as if he’s tempting and inviting the
audience into the magazine.
This image is taken from the vibe media kit. It
is the editorial breakdown of all the departments in all Vibe magazines. In the
departments page of the actual magazine there is a logo on the top right hand
side of the page. The same logo is also on the bottom left corner of the media
kit; this is known and associated worldwide with the Vibe brand.
This double page spread in vibe magazine
was advertised on the front cover, but wasn’t the main cover story; in a cover
line of this addition. The first page of the DPS is a long shot of the artist
Justin Beiber; this could be for a number of reasons. One reason is so the
audience can see the costume he is wearing and the body language he wishes to
show his audience and so that they know the article is about him. In this image
he is standing casually with his legs shoulder width apart and his hands in his
pockets. The costume he is wearing is all black this highlights his seriousness
and his professional manor; his costume is smart-casual. Usually black is
associated with negativity but I don’t think this is the case in this instance.
In fact I think that I could be used to symbolise the total opposite; it makes
him stand put from the grey background, which could represent the other people
in the music industry. The article is about how his life has changed since his
career has elevated; I think that this common association is false in this
article. He isn’t making any eye contact with his audience instead he is looking
to his left and he also has a blank facial expression, again this illustrates
his seriousness towards his career. I think this could be because he is looking
towards the next page, which could symbolise his future. His head is held high
this could illustrate his pride of his success made so far but to also let the
reader know that what he has done so far is not the limit, there is more to
come in the future. At the top of the page is the usual vibe logo that is used
on the pages inside each Vibe edition so the readers know that the page is a
part of Vibes brand. This trait is also on the second page of the DPS.
They layout of the page is a full image of the
artist on page one. The image has been taken in a studio – think that this
makes it look very sophisticated. It also shows the change he is going through
as a result of the mark he has made on the music industry so far. The article
is on page two, it isn’t written in question and /answer form, instead it is
written more as a formal account of the interview; in the beginning it says
what actions Beiber was doing – “Justin Beiber is lounging in a dressing room,
quietly nursing a cold”. The article does include dialogue between Beiber and
the journalist, there are also quotes from outsiders like Steve Bartels (COO of
Def Jam Music Group) he shared his opinion on the success of Beiber’s career
and his great fan base.
The first word of the article is ‘backstage’ the
‘B’ is inverted, so its much bigger than the rest of the text and it is also
and it is grey unlike the bulk of the text. The article is written in column,
this helps to help the page look neat, allows the editor to fit all the
necessary text on the page and it also creates the illusion for the reader that
there isn’t as much text. The quote at the top of the page acts as the
masthead; its quotation marks have been exaggerated because they’re in a bigger
font to the rest of the quote they are also black. Most of the quote is grey
but the part in black gives the reader an insight into the topic of the article
– this bit is written on black and is bold so it really stands out.
