Magazine Stand
I took these photos of a magazine isle in my local Tesco store. The variety was limited in terms of genres and brands; I could easily recognise the issues of Kerrang, Q, Rock and NME magazines, which were available for sale.
The magazine isle was divided into about five sections and the music magazines were included in the computing section on the very bottom shelf. They had all been placed together among other magazines about films, photography and game consoles.
All the magazines were staggered into four rows; Kerrang was on the first row so the buyer can see the full front cover. The cover is very busy with lots of pictures within the cover lines as well as the main image. The masthead is bright yellow and stands out against the blue background. The main image overlaps the masthead, however because Kerrang is such a well-known brand their audience will still be able to identify it. The main cover line is bold and written in white this is to catch the attention of the reader quickly.
On the second row is NME magazine and Q magazine; I can only see the masthead and a few of the cover lines because the magazines on the row in front are covering them. NME Magazine has a clear bold masthead, which is white so it can grab the readers’ attention against the orange background. One of the cover lines on the magazine says ‘The Best…’, which encourages curiosity, whets the apatite for more and is used to entice the buyer to actually purchase the magazine. The skyline is giving the readers a chance to win something; the word ‘Win’ is white which also helps it to be more noticeable.
Q magazine is easily identified because it is the same on each issue of the brands magazines; all Q magazines have the same upper case white Q placed on a red square despite the background of the main image. One of the cover lines is ‘2012 and the most astounding moments’, this is near the top of the front cover because it makes readers want to view the relevant page.

There
were no music magazines on the third row however Rock magazine was located on the fourth row. It was right at the back
but I could see more of the front cover than I could of the ones on rows two and
three. I think this is so that it can get an equal amount of expositor.
One
cover line on Rock magazine says ‘2
free CD’s’ this is to urge their target audience to buy the magazine in order
to receive their two free CD’s.

Persona DPS Developments
This was the first DPS I created in InDesign, I developed this
because I felt that it was too plain especially the second page, I decided to
change this by including a box behind the pull quote. I wanted to maintain the
theme colour but I found that a box with straight edges didn’t look very
appealing so I changed the shape of the edges. I felt that I also needed to
change the edges of the box behind the masthead to fit the trend.
I then decided to change the whole pull quote because after reading through the article again I decided that this one seemed more relevant and it was a better reflection of my artist and the context of the article. I also altered the layout of the pictures on the pages because I felt that there were too many and it made the page look messy. I also changed the colours of the logo that is constant on every page; I decided that it was best if the one on the DPS was the same as the one on the contents page.
I then developed the page further, and changed the layout of
the whole page I decided to have only one main image that covered one side with
the text on the adjacent side. I felt that this layout worked out much better.
I decided to keep the layout of the page the same, but I decided
to change the main image. After looking through all the photos from my photo
shoot I decided that the image I used before wasn’t my strongest image so I
experimented on Photoshop with a few of my strongest images. I also decided to
change the font of the quote because I felt that it was too bold I wanted to
create a foster look. I also made changes to the back ground of the page with the text
on it to black because I felt that the contrast between the two pages was too
harsh. Here are some of the options I explored with my main images.
This is my final design, I feel that the main image is very strong and the front of the quote works really well with it. i also found that the logo on both pages didn't stand out as well against the black background because the 'S' was also black, i decided to change this to white so it was easier to recognise.
Persona Contents Page Developments
I felt that the
transparent box behind the text was too bright and stood out a bit too much,
thought that it was a distraction, so I made it darker, I felt that this worked
much better.
This design
worked well, however I felt that it was a bit too plain so I added a second
page, where I planned to put an Editors note and a few pictures of artists who
would be featured in the magazine.
Once again, I felt the page looked very plain,
especially the second page, so I made some more changes like including a new
image and changing the positions of the text.
I added
the appropriate page numbers to the images to show that the pictures are
relevant to the magazine because there is corresponding articles for each.
This is my
final Design for my Contents Page
