Persona Front Cover Developments

This was the first draft of the front cover, I felt that the arrangement of the page worked well, however I felt that the cover line that was an image looked a bit odd as it drew the attention of the readers from the main image, so I decided to remove it.

These screen shots were taken during the construction of the front cover to show the stages that I went through to get my finished product. Once I removed the picture cover line I needed to fill the gap with some other cover lines, however to do this I had to add more to my contents page so that the names of the  artists i included in the cover lines would feature in the magazine too. i also felt that i had to make the main image bigger so that the model would stand out more against the cover lines and to show that she was the star of this edition. one of the only things that was consistant throughout the construction of my magazine was the main cover line because i felt that it stood out very well and it was different from the usual cover lines.

This is my finished Front Cover.

Questions

1.       What has been inspiration your over the last couple years of your career?

Umm, I think the biggest thing that keeps me going is just seeing everyone else around me growing; like looking at my brother, older cousins… Everyone’s moving up and it’s like I want to be part of it and make my family and myself proud. I’m someone who doesn’t like to just sit down and do nothing, so whatever I can do I will. I love being around creative people who have different ideas so we can try to build something. I believe that inspiration can come from something so small.

2.       How did you feel when you wrote the chorus for ‘Resistance’ for raw talent only?

I was excited to get the opportunity to write the chorus for them, because they are also an up and coming group from London which is really good and They all so their own individual thing as well. The song was basked around a situation that happened to Shaq (Member of the group) and when he explained it to me I felt that I could really relate to it, so it was quite easy for me to find the right words.

3.       Where can your fans catch you performing next?

That’s a hard one because I’m not sure when I’m going to be singing performing. But I think I might be having a hula hooping performance early next year in walthamstow and I’m trying to get a slot on a talent show in central London.

4.       When you’re not in the studio what kind of things do you do?

I like to work out and hula hoop, I’ve also been doing some short films and writing me own scripts as well I’m at university and I’ve been working. But I always just try to be creative

5.       In the future, near future I hope, whom would you want to do a collaboration with?

I would like to work with Bobii Lewis again, I love what he’s doing at the moment; just in terms of me being in his videos again whatever because his work ethic is out of this world.  Burgs as well, he’s got a few things coming out next year. I have had the chance to work with Ashley waters as an extra in his directorial debut called………. I like working with a range of people from different areas of the UK music industry.

6.       What has been your most exciting Project to work on to date?

I think my most exciting project has been preparing from my SB.TV should be bigger video which came out this month. I wanted to get a new hoop anyway but that sort of pushed me to get one that week. I didn’t really have much time to prepare something because of university and deadlines. I live with a DJ so he was playing music for me – he came up with a good mix so it was just really fun to work on that in such a short space of time as well. But it was unfortunate that not all of it got to go in the clip.

7.       I really like your style and fashion sense, where have your ideas come from and what are your favorite brands?

I don’t know where my ideas come from obviously the media has a big influence on what people wear and how they dress, but I don’t really watch TV a lot its just how I feel at the time. Sometimes I feel like wearing a tracksuit and I don’t want to do my hair or I want to be really girly I’ll be in a dress. I like to wear stuff from ‘American apparel’ ‘unico’ I sometimes shop in primark don’t get it twisted! New look, H&M and I work in accessories so some of my stuff comes from there too. I shop in normal shops I just don’t pick out the normal things in the shop.

8.       How important are trainers to you?

Trainers and too important to me, I get this feeling in my heart every two months it’s like I need something… what is it… trainers. I’ve got so many, some of them haven’t even been worn yet, some of them have been worn once and I’ve had them for three years. I think I need to slow down. I’ve just brought some Jordans, which are on the way from America.

9.       What has been your highlight this year?

I think this year my highlight has been joining the national youth theater, that way a really good experience and obviously being with the national youth theater can open so many doors for me. It was really fun for me to meet different people from different back grounds and ages; and we put on a really good show.

10.   You’re a very talented young woman I believe you’ve been busy working alongside sbtv, Starmellow TV and you’ll be in a short film coming out in December, tell me a bit more about that?

Aww thank you. Yeah I’ve been working with quite a few people; it’s funny because when you first start out it’s like this exactly what you want to do it feels like you’re not getting anywhere. But all of a sudden everything comes at once and it’s hard to try and juggle everything. Working with SB.TV was really good, like working alongside Quanson Matthews again, he’s a great guy, and he’s really creative. Working with Starmellow tv was great too working with Moses Levs and darnel was amazing both experiences were really good. I was also in a short film called ‘Statistic’ with Jide Fisher was amazing too I’ve got the preview already but I’m just waiting from him to finish the colour grading before its out, he’s also going to push it to some film festivals as well.

11.   Ultimately what has inspired you to make music?

I think it’s because I’ve always been around people who value music and who are quite creative like my Auntie, Lurine Cato is a gospel singer, my dad plays the guitar and my brother used to play the piano so I’ve always just gone back to music if I haven’t found anything else to do. I love the way it can make people feel it can really help to lift up your mood or you can find a song to relate to your mood in that that time of struggle.

12.   I notice that you’re wearing a cato87 Hoodie; can you explain to me what it is?

Yeah, Cato87 is my brothers company. It’s called cato87 because he was born in 1987 and the clothing part is just an extra, what he actually does is he mentors, takes coaching sessions, he does classes for kids, futsal, foot free styling and anything to do with the sports industry. We needed tracksuits and stuff to work in so he decided to make a clothing brand out of it as well available to anyone.

Our cover star this month is North London’s Lauren Cato. She has told persona about what she’s been up to since taking to the Stage to be the opening act for Marsha Ambrosius earlier this year. Her passion and drive to produce good music, makes our jobs here at persona just that little bit easier.
So sit back and relax…

Magazine Proposal Presentation

Case Study2 - Vibe Contents Page and DPS

The contents page of this edition is called departments; the masthead is the boldest text on this page so it stands out. There are five subheadings that represent each department of the magazine, in front of each subheading there is a page number, which is I colour, that each section starts on. These departments are Enter, Blast, Splurge, Business class and Props. Vibe magazine have used five different symbols to represent the five different departments; these logos and the individual ccolour schemes that go with them are seen in other Vibe magazine contents pages and throughout the issues to help the reader determine what department they are in and also to have a varied theme throughout the magazine.

Most of the text on the page is black the only colour in terms of text is the page numbers which are in the same font and the same size as the subheadings. The text is in one text box, which is positioned on the top right hand side in a column; this is to prevent the text from covering the main image but also allows an equal amount of attention. The sub headings are also in bold and the same font as the heading. The description of the content in each department is in bold but isn’t in the same font or size, this to emphasize each section of the magazine and highlight that each part is unique in its own right.

Once again the duo, Diplo and Azealia Banks are modeling in the main image also set on a beach on the contents page; this shows that the front cover and contents pages of the magazine were designed around them. The main image acts as a background and is a long shot to capture the scenery of the sand and sea on the beach in the frame. The props used in the image illustrate a relaxed day at the beach it also helps the shot look more realistic. The lighting in the image has been made to look like natural daylight creating slight shadows around the models. Azealia’s white dress, calm body language and direct eye contacts toward the audience reveals an innocent, pure side to her however the red theme of her hair, lipstick and the deck chair represents passion and a provocative nature to counterbalance side to her personality that we didn’t see on the cover of this edition.
Diplo’s costume doesn’t really denote a day at the beach however his body language does fit in with the relaxed nature of the image, the way his feet are crossed and he is leaning against the wooden fence. He also looks slightly daring with his hands behind his back and his head tilted to the side, his facial expression and direct eye contact with the audience is as if he’s tempting and inviting the audience into the magazine.

This image is taken from the vibe media kit. It is the editorial breakdown of all the departments in all Vibe magazines. In the departments page of the actual magazine there is a logo on the top right hand side of the page. The same logo is also on the bottom left corner of the media kit; this is known and associated worldwide with the Vibe brand.

This double page spread in vibe magazine was advertised on the front cover, but wasn’t the main cover story; in a cover line of this addition. The first page of the DPS is a long shot of the artist Justin Beiber; this could be for a number of reasons. One reason is so the audience can see the costume he is wearing and the body language he wishes to show his audience and so that they know the article is about him. In this image he is standing casually with his legs shoulder width apart and his hands in his pockets. The costume he is wearing is all black this highlights his seriousness and his professional manor; his costume is smart-casual. Usually black is associated with negativity but I don’t think this is the case in this instance. In fact I think that I could be used to symbolise the total opposite; it makes him stand put from the grey background, which could represent the other people in the music industry. The article is about how his life has changed since his career has elevated; I think that this common association is false in this article. He isn’t making any eye contact with his audience instead he is looking to his left and he also has a blank facial expression, again this illustrates his seriousness towards his career. I think this could be because he is looking towards the next page, which could symbolise his future. His head is held high this could illustrate his pride of his success made so far but to also let the reader know that what he has done so far is not the limit, there is more to come in the future. At the top of the page is the usual vibe logo that is used on the pages inside each Vibe edition so the readers know that the page is a part of Vibes brand. This trait is also on the second page of the DPS.

They layout of the page is a full image of the artist on page one. The image has been taken in a studio – think that this makes it look very sophisticated. It also shows the change he is going through as a result of the mark he has made on the music industry so far. The article is on page two, it isn’t written in question and /answer form, instead it is written more as a formal account of the interview; in the beginning it says what actions Beiber was doing – “Justin Beiber is lounging in a dressing room, quietly nursing a cold”. The article does include dialogue between Beiber and the journalist, there are also quotes from outsiders like Steve Bartels (COO of Def Jam Music Group) he shared his opinion on the success of Beiber’s career and his great fan base.
The first word of the article is ‘backstage’ the ‘B’ is inverted, so its much bigger than the rest of the text and it is also and it is grey unlike the bulk of the text. The article is written in column, this helps to help the page look neat, allows the editor to fit all the necessary text on the page and it also creates the illusion for the reader that there isn’t as much text. The quote at the top of the page acts as the masthead; its quotation marks have been exaggerated because they’re in a bigger font to the rest of the quote they are also black. Most of the quote is grey but the part in black gives the reader an insight into the topic of the article – this bit is written on black and is bold so it really stands out.
